It's a day that audiophiles look forward to like Fat Mike looks forward to a cheeseburger. It's a day that record collectors compare to Black Friday.
Record Store Day is an international day of the celebration and support of independent record stores. Officially, this day of the music gods was founded in 2007. But despite its short life, it has grown into something quite epic. It's this third Saturday of April every year that hundreds of thousand (if not more) music fiends flock to their nearest record store in hopes of snagging a limited edition or never before released album from their favorite artist. Select bands from every genre of music decide to release an album or single to add to the excitement of RSD. Some releases being as limited as 300 to 500 copies for the entire world to share.
Fans then line up outside of record stores, hoping to be one of the lucky ones to grab everything on their list. Some stores have entertainment, in the form of live music, to keep awake the psychotics (who showed up at midnight to wait in line for 8 hours). There are freebies (pins, samplers on cd and/or vinyl, temporary tattoos). And, there's the irreplaceable camaraderie. There's is nothing like the feeling of being half asleep(but also excited), and keeping each other awake by talking about what release you're most excited to get that day.
This year, well, it was a great year for RSD releases. Some of the more notable ones being:
311
Nirvana
Cage The Elephant
Chvrches
The Cure
Death Cab for Cutie
Devo
Green Day
Ice T
Joy Division
Kings of Leon
Oasis
Soundgarden
Tears for Fears
The album that had me dragging the SO out of bed and running to the record store at 6am was Bayside Time Has Come 7 inch. Holy hell. The B side is mind blowing. And the album was limited to 500 copies, so I was really worried I wouldn't be able to pick one up. But, being number 26 in line at GROOVES on Saturday morning was worth it. Hopefully they release it on another format, because its just one of those songs you want to share. The track name is Indiana, and has reminded me why I have been a fan for so long. Anthony Raneri's lyrical talent has me at a loss of descriptive terms. Nothing can really compare to the stories he tells with his music.
I feel so lucky to be able to grasp in my hands this treasure of mine! And I look forward to next year's Record Store Day...Hopeful that Bayside, and a few others, release some more surprises!
If you are any where near the Treasure Coast, please check out this guys place! He knows what he's doing!
